A scary statistic revealed that almost a quarter of pregnant Kiwi’s don’t give up alcohol during the first semester of their pregnancy.
There have been calls for the Government to take action after the study published in New Zealand Medical Journal found that 23 per cent of women continued to drink during the first 3 months of their pregnancy despite being aware of the pregnancy. This is the time when risk of damage to nerve tissue is greatest.
In New Zealand 3000 children are born annually with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.
