According to data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Australians are consuming less alcohol than they have in the last 50 years.

The data reveals that 186 million litres of pure alcohol was consumed in 2016/17 across Australia, this is the lowest amount since 1961-62.

Overall this equates to 9.4 litres of pure alcohol for every person over the age of 15 years.

The greatest contributor to the decline was the drop in beer consumption. According to the statistics Australians consumed 3.4 per cent less pure alcohol from beer compared to the previous year.

While the consumption of beer declined the most, it is still the most consumed alcoholic beverage in Australia accounting for 39.2 per cent of all alcohol consumed in the year.

Wine is the second most consumed and accounted for 28.3 per cent of pure alcohol.
