It is possible that the colour of the alcohol could make a difference to your hang over. Red wine and dark spirits may contain by products from the fermenting process. These byproducts are called “congeners,”.

Congers are complex organic molecules with toxic effects. These include things like acetone, fusel oil, tannins, acetaldehyde,  and furfural.

For example Bourbon has 37 times more congeners then vodka. A study found drinking a lot of bourbon causes a worse hangover than drinking a lot of vodka, however impairment in next-day task performance was the same for both beverages.

So if you like the darker alcohols it may be well worth looking for a company that produces these without also producing congers.
